Urban family: #huntingfamilyfriday

For our very first Hunting Family Friday, we'd like to introduce you to the Urban family from Johnstown, PA.  Their hunting family consists of Dad; Will, Mom; Stephanie (both 32), Gage (12), and Peyton (9).  Their preferred family season is archery and they think there's "Nothing more exciting than rattling in a buck to 20 yards."

Dad Will and Mom Stephanie both learned to hunt and fish when they were about ten years old from their own hunting and fishing families.  As they became parents themselves, they have raised their sons to do the same - Gage learning to hunt at seven and Peyton has been hunting since he was five.  Their favorite recipe for game?  "On a plate!"

With two active sons, each of whom are involved in three or more sports or activities, the Urban family is always on the go.  Stephanie and Will explained, "We are a very busy family...we are constantly running to and from practices, games etc. Being in the outdoors as a family is our time, to take a “timeout” from our crazy lives. It doesn't matter if we are hunting, fishing, or just taking a hike. This is our time to be together and talk about whatever is on our minds."

When asked what their favorite part about hunting and fishing is, sons Gage and Peyton explained, "It doesn't matter to us if we shoot the deer or catch the big fish, we just like being outside, and seeing everything that God has made. Not everyone gets to see what my Mom and Dad take us to see in the woods. Plus, we get to spend time with Mom and Dad and not worry about anything else"

As for their favorite tips and tricks that have been passed down from their family, Mom Steph told us that Big Nick Buchan's secret to a clean shot in archery is that You have to hold your mouth right

Although this sounds confusing, she continues, "The trick is that you have to take both corners of your mouth and turn them up until your mouth is making a big 'U'….which of course is a smile. For as long as I can remember, I can hear him saying, “ What?  You didn’t get anything? -- that’s 'cause you weren’t holding your mouth right.” And now all the grandchildren are saying it too!"

Dad Will and Mom Steph said that the hunting family lesson they hope to preserve with their sons is to just "Get out there –  It’s not about going into the woods and shooting something – it’s about enjoying the beauty that God has provided to us. It’s about being with your family, where nothing else matters."

They know how much truth is in the phrase, "Kids will never remember their favorite day they watched TV or their favorite memory of a video game. But they will remember those days being with the family and laughing in the woods together. "

And this lesson seems to resonate with their sons as well.  When Gage and Peyton were asked which hunting or fishing accessory they can't live without - they both responded, "Mom and Dad"

Special thanks to the Urban family for giving us a look into their hunting family.  They are a shining example of just what we believe in and hope to encourage here at The Hunting Daddies.
